Is Mercor legit? My experience as a Mercor contractor

Yes, Mercor is legit. I have worked there as a contractor since August 2026, and the money is real: Mercor pays every week, on Wednesdays, through Stripe or Wise. It is also selective, and the work is irregular. Tasks come in waves, and projects can pause. Its screening can also reject you when you already work there. Anyone who needs a fixed monthly income from it will end up let down.

I came in through a referral myself, through a referral company, the same way people join through me now. Since August 2026 I have worked on a content-grading project of about 45,000 people, where I rank in the top 1%. I grade whether AI-generated writing sounds human, phrase by phrase, against the client’s own rules.

The facts about Mercor on this page come from its own talent guides and the sources I name. I read them on 2 November 2026.

Mercor

For experts with a degree or real experience in their field who can hold a 15 to 20 minute AI interview in English. Most Mercor listings in October 2026 paid $50 an hour and up, with weekly pay.

What Mercor is

Mercor connects AI labs and companies with experts who help train and evaluate AI models. Its chief executive is Brendan Foody, and its letters give an address at 181 Fremont Street in San Francisco. TechCrunch and Business Insider both describe it as valued at $10 billion. On its Trustpilot profile, Mercor describes its work as part-time, remote contract opportunities at the meeting point of labor markets and AI research.

What the work is like from the inside

The work is spiky. My project itself warns that it is intermittent, and the tasks arrive through a queue. In September I called it inconsistent and exhausting.

Getting in took time as well. The onboarding runs on several tools at once. My work account took more than 40 hours to start working after I had finished the setup. The training was a long course, and it was my only source of knowledge for the job. When something broke, support started with Mercor’s AI assistant, Maven, and both of my problems needed a person from Mercor.

Mercor sets a weekly cap on every contract, and hours above it go unpaid unless your project lead approves them first. When a project pauses, Mercor sets your cap to zero and keeps you in the project pool, with no set timeline. Rates stay fixed once the work starts, and Mercor does not renegotiate them.

Not every kind of AI work suits everyone. I tried one Mercor video-annotation job and hated it, while grading writing fits me far better. Before you accept an offer, look at what the tasks actually are.

How Mercor judges the work

The project scores my verdicts against an expected answer I never see. A mismatch counts as a mistake, and mistakes can get you offboarded. The client also reviews the tasks I submit and sends feedback, and the client’s rules changed during the project.

The pressure starts on day one. In my project’s Slack, the leads announced they were offboarding anyone who had not completed the mandatory training assessment and at least one task. Mercor’s own offboarding page lists the signals it watches: missed deadlines, and weak work that needs several revisions, with poor communication on top. A project lead can first set a trial sprint with clear expectations. Mercor’s advice is to ask your project lead for feedback early.

The tracker matters too. Insightful takes screenshots while it runs, and Mercor says a person reviews the screenshots and the activity before it withholds any pay. Mercor names falsified work and misused AI among the violations, and they can cost you the payment and your place on the project.

What it cost me

To keep the project, I dropped more than half of my teaching hours, including a full day of classes a week. The money is real. So is the cost.

Moving up is hard, even from the inside

Mercor’s screening kept rejecting me on other listings that matched my qualifications, even while I worked there. My own project had stopped hiring by October, so it is not a way in for newcomers.

A rejection on one listing is not a verdict. Mercor can reject you on one listing and then send you an offer for a better project. So apply a lot.

The best reflex is to filter the openings on Explore. Mercor lists them by priority, so the first pages hold the hot projects in high demand. In what I have seen, those answer within a day or two. Explore also has a “Job fit” sort that puts the listings matching your profile first.

The 2026 data breach

Mercor had a serious security incident in 2026. In late March, an attacker had planted malware in certain versions of LiteLLM, an open-source tool Mercor used. It let the attacker into some of Mercor’s systems between 24 and 30 March. Mercor confirmed the attack to TechCrunch on 31 March. It said it was one of thousands of companies hit, and that it had moved to contain it with outside forensics experts.

A hacking group, Lapsus$, claimed to hold Mercor data and published samples. TechCrunch reported that the samples included Slack data and videos of contractors talking with Mercor’s AI. Contractors filed lawsuits within a week, Business Insider reported, and Meta paused its work with Mercor.

Mercor emailed contractors in early April. On 25 June 2026 it sent a formal notice of data breach to the people affected. Each notice lists which of that person’s details the attacker downloaded. Mercor offered 24 months of free credit monitoring and identity restoration through TransUnion. The enrolment deadline, 1 October 2026, has now passed. Mercor also says it has strengthened its security and monitoring since. Its notice urges people to watch their bank statements and credit history, and to contact the police if they suspect identity theft. Mercor also set up a call centre, at 1-844-507-8047, open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time.

My own contract started in August 2026, after the incident. If you worked with Mercor before then, look for a letter or email from Mercor titled “Notice of Data Breach”, dated 25 June 2026.

What Trustpilot says

On 2 November 2026, Trustpilot showed 1,353 reviews of Mercor, with a TrustScore of 4.5 out of 5. Five-star reviews made up 73% and one-star reviews 8%. Trustpilot labels Mercor as a company that invites its users to review, and says it replied to 3% of negative reviews. Mercor claimed the profile in March 2022 and pays for a Trustpilot subscription.

Trustpilot’s summary of recent reviews praises pay that arrives on time and helpful team leads. Its complaints are about sudden changes to hours and contract terms after people join. Several recent reviews also describe removals from a project without warning, which matches what I describe above.

How to recognise the real Mercor

A real Mercor offer shows up in the Offers tab of your dashboard at work.mercor.com. Mercor says a contract is valid when it appears there and you also got an email from Mercor. Background check emails come from Certn or Zinc, its two partners for it. Your ID check runs through Persona. Your work email ends in @mercor.expert, and support writes from support@mercor.com. Your onboarding document, with your project lead’s contact, appears in the Contracts tab.

How Mercor pays

Mercor pays every Wednesday through Stripe, or through Wise where Stripe is not available. Its pay week closes on Friday at 11:59 PM, India time, and the first Stripe payout has a seven-day hold. Persona ID verification is mandatory. Training time counts as paid time once the tracker runs. Your Contracts tab shows your pay cycle, your hours, your cap and your expected earnings.

Who Mercor is for

Mercor hires experts as independent contractors for paid projects with AI companies. Its headquarters are in San Francisco. It says it wants STEM PhDs, MDs, licensed attorneys, senior engineers and finance professionals, and it also runs large generalist projects. On its Trustpilot profile, Mercor says more than 30,000 professionals have worked with it.

Listings in October 2026 mostly paid $50 an hour and up, and some expert listings ran from $150 to $250. Mercor says it hires globally: a listing that names a region is open only to that region, and any other listing is open to talent anywhere. It pays in 107 countries through Stripe or Wise, including Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana, Saudi Arabia, India and the Philippines. You need a laptop and a headset with a separate microphone, and some Mercor roles require an M-series MacBook.

It does not suit anyone who needs a fixed monthly income. Mercor works only with contractors, and it does not turn contracts into full-time jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mercor a scam?

No. It is a real company that pays contractors every week, and I have worked there since August 2026. A real offer appears in the Offers tab of your Mercor dashboard.

Does Mercor really pay?

Yes. Mercor pays every Wednesday through Stripe or Wise, and the money is real. Your first Stripe payout has a seven-day hold, so the first payment takes longer. Trustpilot’s summary of recent reviews also highlights pay that arrives on time.

How much does Mercor pay?

Listings in October 2026 mostly paid $50 an hour and up, and some expert listings $150 to $250. Mercor does not renegotiate a rate once the work starts.

Was my data part of the Mercor breach?

If it was, Mercor sent you a notice dated 25 June 2026 that lists what the attacker downloaded. Search for “Notice of Data Breach” from Mercor. Its call centre is 1-844-507-8047, on weekdays, Eastern time.

Is Mercor safe after the data breach?

The breach was real, and Mercor’s own notice confirms that the attacker downloaded contractors’ data. Mercor says it has strengthened its security and monitoring since. Weigh that before you upload your ID, as you would with any platform that holds it.

Can Mercor remove me from a project without warning?

It can. Mistakes against an expected answer can get you offboarded, and recent Trustpilot reviews describe removals without a clear reason. Mercor’s own advice is to ask your project lead for feedback early.

Why does Mercor keep rejecting me?

Its screening is selective. It kept rejecting me on listings that matched my qualifications, even while I worked there. A rejection on one listing is not a verdict, so filter Explore and apply to the first pages, where the hot projects sit.

How fast does Mercor reply?

In what I have seen, the hot projects on the first pages of Explore answer within a day or two. Other listings take longer, so keep applying while you wait.

Is Mercor a full-time job?

No. Mercor works only with contractors and does not turn contracts into full-time jobs. Work comes in waves, and a weekly cap limits your paid hours.
