The micro1 Zara interview: what it asks, how I passed one and failed one

I have taken three Zara interviews on micro1, and I failed one of them. Zara is micro1’s AI interviewer for everyone who applies to a role. You answer out loud, in English, and in your second language too if the role is bilingual. Your camera stays on and you share your screen. micro1 says the interview lasts 20 to 40 minutes, about seven minutes per skill the role needs. Zara builds its questions on the skills of the role you applied to. What it tests is the vocabulary of that work.

I failed the video-annotation one because I did not know the vocabulary of the role. I passed a generalist one without knowing every term it asked about. My latest, for a bilingual French role, tested how I handle a mistake before it tested my French.

A pass gives you micro1’s certification. Paid work is a separate step, and it depends on the roles open at the time.

micro1 accepted me, and I have been under contract there since September 2026. In October 2026 it moved me to the next step for its Educator/Assessor Writer role. The facts about micro1 on this page come from its own website, as it read on 1 and 2 November 2026.

My first two Zara interviews: one fail, one pass

One interview was for video annotation. Zara asked me to name evaluation metrics and to give their numeric thresholds, the cut-off values that go with them. I did not know them, and I failed.

The other was a generalist interview. Zara asked about the terms of rating systems. I did not know that terminology either, and I passed.

Not knowing every term did not stop me on the generalist interview. Not knowing the vocabulary of the role stopped me on video annotation. So I tell everyone the same thing: prepare the vocabulary of the role you apply to.

My bilingual interview: escalation first, then French

In November 2026 I took a third Zara interview, for a bilingual expert role in French. It came in two parts.

The first part was mostly about the chain of command and escalation. Zara asked how I would tell someone I had made a mistake, and how I would talk to a technician about it. It asked what I would do so the mistake does not happen again, and what I would do if the technician were rude. The whole angle was reporting, and knowing how to act when things go wrong.

It also sorted tasks into high stakes and low stakes, because the role needs some autonomy. Then the second part switched to French. Zara asked similar questions, and it kept correcting me.

Two things to know before an interview like this one. Zara corrects you and puts the pressure on. The questions also climb in difficulty as you go, so hard questions at the end can be a sign that you are doing well. Do not panic when they come.

For a role like this, the vocabulary to prepare is the language of escalation and of owning a mistake, in both of your languages.

What the micro1 interview tests

micro1 explains how this works on its own pages. Its recruiters set the skills for each role from the client’s needs. When you apply, Zara builds its questions on those skills. micro1 also says no two candidates receive the same questions, so there is no fixed list to learn by heart.

Zara asks open questions on the skills of your role, and scenario questions about how you would handle a situation. micro1’s own examples include a disagreement inside a team and a decision under uncertainty. Technical roles add a coding challenge, and annotator roles add an exercise.

micro1’s own sample questions show the depth. For a physics trainer role, they ask you to explain ideas such as entanglement or Bell’s inequalities. For a project manager, they ask how you would handle a slipping dependency. Another asks about a technical lead going on leave in the last two weeks of a delivery. For an account executive, they ask you to walk through a complex sale with several decision makers. Zara adapts to your background, and micro1 says the difficulty depends on your field and experience. The same page has samples for full-stack developers and marketing experts too.

That explains my video-annotation fail. The role had its own technical vocabulary, and Zara asked for it.

Who sees your Zara interview

micro1 records the interview so its human recruiters can review your results and match you to roles. Its candidate privacy policy says it scores the interview from the recording, screen share included, and uses proctoring tools to check its integrity. A person reviews the assessment before any final decision.

The same policy says micro1 may train its own models on interview data once it has removed what identifies you. It says it does not share candidate data with AI model companies to train theirs. You can delete your account, or opt out of AI training on your data, from your talent account.

The rules I give friends before their interview

When a friend prepares for Zara, I send them these notes.

Do the free practice interview first. Never take the real one tired. micro1 lets you take it on demand, at any time, so choose an hour when you are fresh.

Take it alone in the room. No ChatGPT and no script. micro1 records the interview, and its candidate privacy policy says its proctoring tools check the integrity of each session.

When in doubt, follow the client’s guideline, never your own taste. The client knows what it needs. If a scenario question puts you in a grey area, the guideline is the answer that fits the work.

Be able to name several kinds of evaluation work: grading answers, ranking versions, transcribing audio, annotating video.

Have an answer ready for two questions. For “how do you make time for this”, a plain answer is a routine and a place to work. For “how do you handle time zones”, it is mornings before the US wakes up and evenings after work.

Take the domain-expert interview too. It opens better projects. micro1 puts it this way: each extra skill you pass widens the range of projects it can consider you for.

The free micro1 practice interview

micro1 runs free practice interviews at micro1.ai/interview-prep. You pick the position closest to yours and take an AI practice interview. You then get feedback on how you did. The page gives 18 minutes for each practice interview. micro1’s interview guide adds a tip: pick the one core skill or job type you want Zara to evaluate.

The practice run is also the moment to test your setup. You need a laptop and a headset with a separate microphone. The camera and the screen share have to work on that laptop. Your English has to carry a conversation of 20 to 40 minutes.

You also need a degree or real experience in the field of the role. micro1 takes people from all over the world. I know people from many countries who got in there.

What happens after you pass the micro1 interview

After a pass, micro1 asks you to complete your profile and verify your identity. You scan an original, valid government ID with your camera, then take a selfie. The name on the ID has to match the name on your application. micro1 says it usually checks IDs in English or Arabic within minutes, and IDs in other languages can take up to 72 hours.

Then you receive the micro1 certificate and join its talent pool. There are two ways into a role from there. micro1 can invite you when a role fits your skills. You can also apply yourself, on micro1’s Opportunities Portal, to any open role that matches them. Each role shows its rate, so you see what it pays before you apply. Apply to everything in your lane.

You do not always start from zero. Zara compares your past results with the skills a new role needs. If you already passed those skills, micro1 can skip the interview. It calls this “Fast-Track”. It can also test only the missing skills, in what it calls a “Partial interview”. It counts interviews you passed after July 2025.

When micro1 selects you, you accept the offer in your talent portal and an onboarding checklist opens. The contract itself comes through Deel.

Every status on your micro1 dashboard

Your talent dashboard shows one status for each application. Here is what each one means, in micro1’s own terms.

  • “Interview pending”: micro1 has your application but not your interview yet. The interview link is in the job.
  • “Awaiting next steps”: micro1 is preparing the next step and will tell you.
  • “Under review”: recruiters are reviewing your interview. micro1 says this can take up to 48 hours.
  • “Did not qualify”: you did not meet the criteria for this one role. You can ask for feedback, and the team can still contact you about another role.
  • “Hiring manager reviewing”: you did well, and a person is reviewing your profile. It is not a placement yet, and it can last up to 30 days.
  • “Selected”: micro1 chose you for the role and emails you the onboarding steps.
  • “Not selected”: you did well, but micro1 did not pick you for this role. It can still consider you for others.
  • “Hiring on hold”: micro1 paused hiring for this role and says it will update you if hiring resumes.
  • “Application incomplete”: the role closed before you finished the interview.
  • “Not interested”: you turned the opportunity down yourself.

Your dashboard updates on its own as the application moves. micro1 says none of these statuses has a fixed timeline. Matching depends on the roles open at the time, and it can take time. A no on one role is not a verdict on you.

If you fail a Zara interview

A fail shows as “Did not qualify”, and it covers that one role only. micro1 lets you ask for detailed feedback. You click the application on your talent dashboard, and micro1 emails you what went well and what to work on.

Use that email to find the missing words. My video-annotation fail came from metrics and thresholds I did not know, and that is vocabulary you can learn.

Then apply again elsewhere. micro1’s team can still contact you about another role, and you can apply to any other open role that fits. Zara reuses only the skills you passed, so another role tests only the skills it still needs.

A role with an exercise: the Educator/Assessor Writer step

Some roles add a skills assessment or an exercise to the interview. micro1’s Educator/Assessor Writer role is one of them. In October 2026 micro1 moved me to that role’s next step: an AI interview plus an exercise, up to 48 minutes in total. It needed the same camera and screen-share setup as any Zara interview.

The role is about judging AI-written answers. You compare responses for clarity, tone, helpfulness and instruction adherence. You score them against rubrics and write rationales for your scores. You also flag answers that sound fluent but give no support for what they claim. The listing showed $90 to $140 an hour in October 2026.

The interview for this role focuses on technical writing fundamentals, editing and proofreading, analytical judgment, and writing a rationale under constraint. The listing itself gives you the words to prepare: rubric, rationale, instruction adherence, unsupported answers. That is my video-annotation lesson again. The vocabulary comes from the role.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the micro1 Zara interview?

micro1 says 20 to 40 minutes. The length depends on how many skills the role needs, at about seven minutes per skill. Some roles add an assessment or an exercise. My Educator/Assessor Writer step allowed up to 48 minutes for the interview and the exercise together.

What questions does Zara ask in the micro1 interview?

Open questions on the skills of your role, and scenario questions about how you handle situations. Technical roles add a coding challenge, and annotator roles add an exercise. micro1’s own samples go deep: a physics role asks about ideas such as entanglement, and a project manager role asks how you would rescue a slipping delivery.

Is the micro1 Zara interview hard?

It depends on how well you know the vocabulary of the role. I failed a video-annotation interview on evaluation metrics and thresholds I did not know, and I passed a generalist one without knowing every term. The questions also get harder as you go, and Zara corrects you, so hard final questions can mean you are doing well.

What does the micro1 bilingual interview ask?

Mine was for French. Its first part covered escalation, such as how to report a mistake and what to do if a technician is rude about it. The second part asked similar questions in French, and Zara kept correcting me. The tasks came sorted by high and low stakes, because the role needs some autonomy.

Can I use ChatGPT or notes during the micro1 interview?

No. My rule is to take it alone in the room. ChatGPT and scripts stay out. micro1 records the interview, and its candidate privacy policy says proctoring tools check the integrity of each session. A person reviews the assessment before any final decision.

Is there a practice interview for micro1?

Yes. micro1’s practice interviews at micro1.ai/interview-prep are free. You pick a position and take an 18-minute practice interview. micro1 then gives you feedback on how you did.

What happens if I fail the micro1 interview?

Your dashboard shows “Did not qualify” for that role. micro1 says its team can still contact you about another role, and you can request detailed feedback by email. A fail on one role is not a verdict: I failed video annotation and passed a generalist interview.

How do I get feedback on a failed micro1 interview?

Open your talent dashboard and click the application whose status reads “Did not qualify”. micro1 then emails you detailed feedback on what went well and what to work on.

How long does micro1 take to review my interview?

micro1’s dashboard guide says the recruiters’ review can take up to 48 hours. After a good interview, “Hiring manager reviewing” can last up to 30 days. micro1 says no status has a fixed timeline.

Do I have to take a new interview for every micro1 role?

Not always. Zara compares your past results with the skills a new role needs. If you passed those skills after July 2025, micro1 can skip the interview (“Fast-Track”) or test only the missing skills (“Partial interview”).

Does passing the micro1 interview get me a job?

No. A pass and the ID check earn you the micro1 certificate and a place in its talent pool. micro1 says certification does not guarantee a placement, and matching depends on the roles open at the time. Meanwhile you can apply yourself to every open role in your lane.

Does a referral link help my micro1 application?

No. micro1 evaluates every candidate the same way, with or without a link. The link only tells micro1 who sent you.
