Mercor’s own guide says background check results come within 5 to 7 business days, depending on your country. The check cannot move until you send the provider what it asks for. It is one step of a longer onboarding. You also sign documents, verify your ID, set up payments and install the tools you work in. Mercor also says you must clear the check before you start work or log hours. The waiting after it is normal. I joined a Mercor project in August 2026. My work account took more than 40 hours to start working after I had finished every setup step.
The facts about Mercor on this page come from its own talent guides, as they read on 1 November 2026.
Everything Mercor’s onboarding asks of you
Mercor’s onboarding runs on several tools at once. It starts when an offer appears in your Mercor dashboard. The offer page shows the start date, the hourly pay, the payout schedule and your weekly cap. Mercor suggests a screenshot of the rate and the cap before you accept. You sign the offer letter first, and it opens a checklist with everything else. Then come the contracts and a tax form. Mercor works only with contractors, and it does not turn contracts into full-time jobs.
Next comes verification. Alongside the background check, Persona checks your identity with a government ID and a short selfie video, and you finish it on your phone. Mercor says you usually redo this ID step with each new offer. Some projects also ask you to confirm that you may work legally from where you live, and to verify your phone number.
The Persona step needs a phone with a working camera: an iPhone or iPad on iOS 17.6 or later, or an Android phone on Android 9 or later. If you start on a computer, a QR code moves you to the phone. Mercor says most checks finish within moments, and some need a review of up to one business day.
Then come the tools. On top of your own email, you get a Mercor work email, an @mercor.expert address. A single sign-on, Okta, opens the work apps. Slack carries all project communication. Insightful, a desktop time tracker, has a start and stop button and takes random screenshots while it runs. It needs a computer with Windows 10 or later, or macOS 11 or later. The tasks themselves happen on the client’s own platform.
Payment setup closes the list: Stripe, or Wise where Stripe is not available.
What the background check involves
Mercor works with two background check providers, Certn and Zinc. The provider emails a secure link to your personal inbox. Look in your spam and “updates” folders too. Mercor asks you to fill in the provider’s form within 48 hours.
You may see two checks in your Project Dashboard. Mercor says that usually means a criminal background check and an adverse media check. The check cannot move without the documents the provider asks for, and Mercor cannot waive them.
The provider collects and keeps your data, not Mercor. If a result looks wrong, you dispute it with the provider directly. You follow the status in your Project Dashboard, under “Background check”. If it goes past seven business days, Mercor’s guide tells you to write to the provider and to Mercor support with your report ID.
What the check covers
Mercor says its clients include firms in engineering, medicine, law and investment banking, so its checks go deeper than identity. Depending on where you live and the role, they can include:
- Criminal record checks, in local, national and sometimes international databases.
- Regulatory checks for finance and legal roles, including sanctions lists and professional disciplinary databases.
- Civil litigation checks, for patterns of fraud or malpractice.
- Global watchlist screening, for flags such as terrorism or money laundering.
Mercor says serious offences, such as fraud, embezzlement, insider trading or violent crime, can rule you out. It also says it reads results in context, such as the time since an offence and its relevance to the work. Its checks follow the FCRA in the US and the GDPR in the EU. The criteria can differ with your country and the role, and local rules may call for an individual assessment. Your identity check is a separate step, run by Persona.
What your check status means
Your Project Dashboard shows one row per provider, with one of five statuses: Action needed, In progress, Under review, Passed or Failed. “Action needed” means an email is waiting for you, so check your inbox and your spam folder.
Each row combines two checks, the criminal background check and the adverse media check, and it only clears when both checks finish. If you got a completion email for one and the row still says “Under review”, look for a second email about the other.
How to keep your check moving
Mercor asks for accurate personal details from the start: your name, date of birth, address and, where relevant, your driving licence number. If your history is complex, Mercor suggests you review your own records before you apply, so you can explain them.
The check asks for a seven-year address history, and Mercor cannot waive it. List only places where you lived or held a registered address, never holidays or short trips. Each country in that history can trigger its own records check. A wrong address can hold you up over a country you never lived in.
Answer document requests fast. Mercor cannot waive a document the provider asks for, and it cannot speed up a check once Certn or Zinc has it. If you lack a document, ask the provider if it accepts an alternative. Mercor does not refund what you pay to obtain documents.
For status questions, go to the provider: support@certn.co for Certn, or Zinc’s help centre. Mercor says most Certn checks finish in 5 to 7 business days, while Zinc’s time depends on the country. Zinc publishes its own turnaround times, country by country.
If the check fails, or your offer runs out
If the check fails, your offer shows “Failed” and Mercor emails you. It also withdraws any related offers, and its advice is to contact support for next steps. If you think a result is wrong, you dispute it with the provider. Mercor says it shares background information only within its vetting process.
Before onboarding, Mercor can revoke a contract on its own, for example after a failed check or a change in the project. Once onboarding begins, it does not revoke contracts automatically.
Watch the deadline on your offer. Mercor says an expired offer cannot come back, and it does not extend offers. You would have to apply again.
A cleared check stays valid for five years, and Mercor reuses it for new projects that need the same type of check.
What went wrong for me, and what fixed it
Two things went wrong. First, the time tracker cut me off at 10 hours one week. The project allowed up to 40 hours a week, and my weekly cap on Mercor was 70. Then the qualifying quizzes did not appear for weeks after I finished the training. That blocked my official start.
Support starts with Mercor’s AI assistant, Maven. Both of my problems needed a person from Mercor. If the assistant cannot fix something, ask support for a person. Your onboarding document also names a point of contact and escalation contacts for your project. Keep them at hand.
Insightful, the tracker that decides your pay
Insightful is Mercor’s official time tracker, and nearly every contract uses it. It records your time on hourly contracts and checks your work on task-based ones. It also takes screenshots while it runs, at random moments in my experience.
You can only start the timer once Mercor assigns you to a project, which can take 12 to 24 hours after onboarding. While your contract is still in review, Insightful stays switched off, and Mercor says this is normal.
Log only active work, which includes client meetings and mandatory trainings. Mercor forbids adding time by hand and leaving the timer on while you are idle. A person reviews the screenshots and the activity before Mercor withholds any pay.
Every contract has a weekly cap, and hours above it go unpaid unless your project lead approves them in advance. When my tracker stopped me at 10 hours, the fix was a person. Mercor’s own advice for a cap problem is your project’s point of contact, because support cannot change the cap.
The pressure in Slack
Slack is where the project speaks to you, and the pressure started on day one. In my project’s Slack, the leads made an announcement. They were offboarding anyone who had not completed the mandatory training assessment and at least one task. Finish the training assessment and a first task early.
The training, and when pay starts
My training was a long course covering nine task types, mostly around slide decks. It was my only source of knowledge for the job.
Mercor pays training time once the tracker runs. It also says you must clear the background check before you log hours. So paid training only starts once the check clears.
Mercor pays every Wednesday, through Stripe or Wise. Its guide says the first Stripe payout has a seven-day hold, and the bank transfer then takes three to seven business days. Mercor asks you to use your exact legal name on every account, from the offer to your bank.
Mercor’s pay week runs from Saturday to Friday on India time. It closes at 11:59 PM there on Friday, which is Friday morning in the Americas. Hours you log late on Thursday in the Americas can already count for the next week. Mercor processes payouts by the end of Wednesday, Pacific time, and says most funds arrive on Thursday.
The signs that you are in
Ticking the whole checklist is not the sign. These are:
- Your Project Dashboard says the background check is clear.
- Your onboarding document sits in the Contracts tab, with the project instructions and your point of contact. Mercor’s guide says it arrives within 7 days.
- Okta opens your work apps, and you can read the project Slack.
- Your project shows up in the Insightful app, which can take 12 to 24 hours after onboarding.
- The Insightful tracker runs, so your training hours count.
- The qualifying quizzes appear after your training.
My quizzes took weeks to appear, so the last sign can be the slowest.
Quick fixes from Mercor’s own guide
- Your offer does not show: open the Offers tab, refresh, and log in again. If it is still missing, write to support with the listing link.
- A Slack or tool invitation is missing: check your inbox, and after 24 hours ask your project lead to resend it.
- You picked the wrong Stripe country: use “Reset Stripe” on the offer page.
- Insightful does not sync: wait a few hours after onboarding before you report it.
- You declined an offer by mistake: contact support at once, with the listing link and your email address.
- Your weekly cap is too low: ask your project’s point of contact.
- Your onboarding document is missing: allow up to 7 days, then write to support.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Mercor background check take?
Mercor’s guide says 5 to 7 business days, depending on your country. The check cannot move until you send the provider what it asks for. Mercor asks you to fill in its form within 48 hours. Past seven business days, write to the provider and to Mercor support with your report ID.
Is the Certn or Zinc email about my Mercor check real?
Yes. Mercor says it works with both providers, and an email from either one is part of its standard background check. The provider collects your documents and keeps your data. Mercor says it does not store that data itself.
Can I start working before the Mercor background check clears?
No. Mercor’s guide says you must clear the check before you start work or log hours. You can sometimes complete the rest of onboarding while the check finishes.
What happens if the Mercor background check fails?
Mercor’s FAQ says it can revoke a contract before onboarding if the check fails. If a result looks wrong, you can dispute it directly with the provider.
Do I need a new background check for every Mercor project?
Usually not. Mercor says a cleared check stays valid for five years and carries over to new projects that need the same type of check. The Persona ID step is different: you usually repeat it with each new offer.
What does “Action needed” mean on my Mercor background check?
It means an email from the provider is waiting for you. Check your inbox and your spam folder, then complete what it asks.
Can Mercor speed up my background check?
No. Once Certn or Zinc has your check, Mercor cannot expedite it. For a status update, contact the provider directly.
What happens if my Mercor offer expires?
It stays expired. Mercor does not reactivate or extend offers, so you would need to apply to new roles. Accept within the deadline on the offer.
When does Mercor pay?
Every Wednesday, through Stripe or Wise. Mercor pays training time once the tracker runs. Its guide says the first Stripe payout has a seven-day hold.
Why can’t I see my Mercor onboarding document?
Mercor’s guide says the onboarding instructions arrive within 7 days and appear in your Contracts tab. In the meantime, finish whatever setup steps are still open. If you are already onboarding, this link cannot count for you, because Mercor only counts people new to it. If you know a colleague who would fit, please pass it on.
